Ohio EPA Awards Gelfand STEM Center Ohio Environmental Education Grant

Thanks to the efforts of James Bader, Executive Director of the Leonard Gelfand STEM Center – College of Arts & Sciences, the Ohio EPA Environmental Education Fund awarded the Center a $45,633 grant for the Kelley’s Island Collaborative. This grant provides professional development for Cleveland Metropolitan School District teachers at the new Kelley’s Island Field Station and at the West Creek Reservation (Cleveland Metroparks). Teachers will focus on the best management practices for nutrient control and the relationship to harmful algal blooms; the relationship between habitat and biodiversity; and storm water management practices. Teachers, in turn, will instruct their students to address ecological problems using Biology, Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The work of the fifteen teachers involved will potentially impact 1500 8th – 10th grade level students.
