Join us for a year-round salt monitoring project

Leonard Gelfand STEM Center, with funding from the Ohio Environmental Education Fund and in collaboration with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Warrensville Heights City School District presents SALT-FRESH, a year-round stream monitoring program using standardized protocols and cutting-edge technology to track the physical, chemical, and biological impacts of road salt on our local rivers and streams.

All participants will be the first to use (andkeep) the Watershed Guardian,a stream monitoring device specifically designed for educators and citizen scientists. During the academic year, teachers, with the assistance of CWRU undergraduate Near Peer Mentors, will facilitate the development and implementation of a year-round monitoring schedule culminating in a student-driven community action plan that protects a local stream.

The program will use the Cleveland Professional Development Center at E. 79th and Superior as base for the week, but much of our work will take place at various field sites.
