Shipwreck Camp ready to launch July 8-19, 2024
Join us for a virtual adventure to find a shipwreck in Lake Erie! Inspired by the research and exploration of Dr. Robert Ballard, father of the JASON Project, the Immersion Presents Program, and finder of the wreckage of the Titanic, this camp will engage campers in field science and exploration weekdays from 9:00a.m. – 3:30p.m. (times may vary, depending on event planned).
Home base for the camp is located on the campus of Case Western Reserve University, but campers will take day trips to several other sites around northeast Ohio such as Cleveland Lakefront State Park and the Mentor Headlands. Each camper must be at least 12 years old, or not older than 16, by the start of camp in 2024.
Campers should be in good health, be able to get into and out of small or large boats and, at minimum, not be afraid of water, insects, boats, or the out of doors. Swimming skills are advantageous but not required. Familiarity with internet searches and computer skills in Microsoft Office software packages are helpful in compiling reports and building expedition plans. Students will be working in teams and some activities will be photographed or video taped.
During this fun-filled two weeks, campers will:
*read novels related to exploration
*meet local experts
*build remotely operated vehicles for underwater exploration
*conduct the research necessary to find a wreck in Lake Erie
*use the tools of a scientist, conduct field research
*embrace the history of the Great Lakes region
*immerse themselves in an introduction to SCUBA and snorkeling
*develop navigational skills on land and water
*discover what weather contributes to shipwrecks in the Great Lakes
*develop a plan and find a wreck
*share discoveries
